Even surgery doesn't stop alcoholics' habits

Life-saving surgery may not induce some patients with alcoholic liver disease to stop drinking, researchers report.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Isn't that how addictions work? They're not logical. Addictive behavior can be seen as a symptom of something much deeper -- kind of a substitute for what you really need but can't get.

We can be judgmental, we can look down on those people, we can shake our heads at how stupid it all looks from the outside -- but anyone addicted to nicotine, alcohol, food, exercise, starving, or a host of other drugs ( possibly even marijuana) knows the powerful force of the addictive substance.

Perhaps a twelve-step program or intensive addictions counseling could be a good requirement for those who undergo surgery for alcoholic liver disease.

The irony is the fact that the doctors who did the study seem surprised by the results. Actually their surprise should be that only 40% returned to drinking. How did the other 60% stay sober? A 60% recovery rate seems very high.

The 40% are just truly dedicated alcoholics I guess?

alcoholics costs health care a lot money and making it unaffordable for so many other people. their insurance premium should go as long as possible, may be they will choose to settle hunger before alcohol cravings but again, why even develop any methods to save their lives, just let them drink to death as nature intends

There's nothing "natural" about being an alcoholic....it's a disease

What do you expect? They're addicts! Wasting a donated liver on them is ridiculous.
